Nikkita : "I used a range of mixed media processes and techniques to create this jacket : hand embroidery, free motion embroidery, stencilling, fabric paint, spray paint, oil bars, pastels, fabric markers, transfer paper, vanishing muslin on white denim fabric.

This was inspired by the public’s responses to my last exhibition, in Edinburgh, Scotland. The photographs are taken in front of the Brexit Respond Backdrop to show where my inspiration derived from.

The shape of Brexit Respond references the style of jackets worn by female politicians involved in the Brexit* issue (Michelle O’Neill, Nicola Sturgeon, Theresa May). For the side panels, collar and sleeve I copied the handwriting of the public who responded using hand embroidery, fabric markers and transfer paper.

On the back of the jacket, I embroidered portraits of the main politicians from Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales (Michelle O’Neil - leader of Sinn Féin in the North of Ireland; Nicola Sturgeon- Scotland’s First Minister; Carwyn Jones - Wales First Minister, Jeremy Corbyn - Leader of Labour Party; Theresa May – UK Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party) with free motion embroidered text stitched onto it, including Brexit means, Irish Border and Arlene Foster."

* 'Brexit' is the move by the UK (Britain) to exit from the European Union (EU) which it decided in 1975 to join. A Referendum on the question of whether to leave or remain took place in 2016 and was won by the 'leave' vote (52% to 48% in the UK, overall). However, the voters in both the north of Ireland and in Scotland voted to remain inside the EU. But since that Referendum the UK government has insisted that the UK as a whole will leave. The exact terms of the departure from the EU are the subject of so much contention, mismanagement and uncertainty by the British government that it has unsettled the political scene in the country. At the time of writing in early 2018 it is still not clear whether Britain will leave or remain in the EU, or if it does leave, when this would happen or on what terms.
