Deborah : "I have installed it at full scale measuring 8.4 meters by 3.5 meters and 3.5meters and I have also installed it in smaller spaces, where I exhibited it lying on its side, therefore taking up much less room.
It must always be exhibited in a state of collapse as that is the message of 'Liberty in decline'. Even when it was exhibited fully erected it was shown in a state of collapse with panels taken off and configured in such a way as to make a wall.
My work is a wooden construction of the Statue of Liberty. This statue has been the world symbol for liberty, justice and democracy as is attested by her true name : "Liberty Enlightening the World" and yet, all that it stands for is under attack. The once welcoming symbol to immigrants entering the USA is now in a state of collapse, putting the integration of other peoples’ and their cultures into reverse.
This piece comprises of over 100 glued and screwed panels enabling it to be constructed in such a way as to be site specific. Therefore, no two showings of it are the same but the fundamental message is the same. The notion of liberty in demise, racism and separateness are more dominant now than the ideals of inclusivity.
Ideas, ideals and philosophies spread from country to country and now there is much more talk of the UK (following Brexit) opening up trade deals with Trump. There is a fear that it is not just goods and services coming from the USA that will further alter the culture of the UK but that a similar line in political leaders is the common theme worldwide. As Naomi Klien wrote in her book "No Is Not Enough : Defeating the New Shock Politics" :
“Trump is but one strand of a seemingly global contagion. We are seeing a surge of authoritarian, xenophobic, far-right politics – from Marine Le Pen in the France, to Narendra Modi in India, to Rodrigo Durerte in the Philippines, to the UK Independence Party, to Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey and all of their counterparts (some explicitly neo-fascist) threatening to take power around the world."
