Catriona : "This sculpture represents the column in fragments - reflecting the current political situation collapsing under its own weight, corruption.
The column - a symbol of power, history and hierarchy is broken in this sculptural form. Consisting of domestic and construction materials - it battles against its own construction being pulled and distorted in every direction.
Using these types of non-traditional and cheap materials (as opposed to marble or more valuable sculpture materials) highlights the inequality of hierarchical systems in society and the growing austerity.
Using recycled materials also considers global environmental concerns and sustainability - the materials were taken from a rubbish tip - and recycled into the sculpture, making something monumental out of the discarded waste materials. The materials were recycled after the exhibition."
