Mary : "The Red Line Has Already been Crossed - Children around the World are exposed to Violence - often daily.
I was inspired to make this piece after hearing about a series of violent incidents in which children were shot and killed either on their way to school or inside school itself. These particular incidents occurred as Malala Yousefzei was shot on her way to school in Pakistan, children at a primary school were shot and killed in Scotland, there was (yet another) High School shooting in USA, 300 boys at another school in Pakistan were shot, schools were bombed in Syria and so on.
And yet, parents tend to take it for granted that school should be a place of safety, learning and fulfilment. Recent times, though, have seen an increase in the numbers of children shot and killed at school in countries all around the globe.
The images are drawn on exercise book paper, as if taken from a pupil’s school project. Included on the foot-rest of this desk, is an image of the oxymoron ‘peacekeeper’ missile (developed in USA and sold around the world)."
