Wherever Prisons are in the world we favour a Human Rights approach to them, in line with Human Rights Watch and the UK’s Prison Reform Trust. In UK prisons inmates who are deemed to be standing up to the system can be categorised as ‘violent’ inmates and put in solitary confinement, using ‘Rule 48’. This is aimed at stifling dissent & protest and too often they are beaten up during this period in order to ''shut them up''. Human Rights Watch and the Prison Reform Trust have for a long time been trying to get this stopped. Around the world there are countless situations like this, or worse. Why not use Prisons to reduce the crime rate, reduce re-offending, rehabilitate prisoners, and prepare them to be useful to their families, communities and societies upon release ?
